Epitalon
A synthetic four–amino-acid peptide promoted for anti-ageing and longevity. The supporting research is almost entirely early-stage and originates from a small number of Russian groups, so claims should be read with strong caution.

What it is
Epitalon (also spelled Epithalon) is a synthetic peptide made of four amino acids — alanine, glutamic acid, aspartic acid and glycine (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly). It was described as a synthetic version of a peptide isolated from Epithalamin, an extract of the pineal gland, by researchers in the former Soviet Union and later Russia.1
It is marketed almost exclusively as an “anti-ageing” or “longevity” peptide. As with many such products, it is important to separate that marketing from the actual strength of the evidence, which is the focus of the sections below.
How it works
The proposed mechanisms come mainly from laboratory and animal work. Epitalon has been reported to influence the pineal gland and melatonin signalling, and some cell-culture studies have suggested it can affect telomerase — the enzyme that maintains the protective caps (telomeres) on chromosomes.2 From this, proponents extrapolate broad anti-ageing effects.
These ideas are biologically interesting but largely theoretical. A measurable effect on telomerase in a dish is a long way from extending healthy human lifespan, and that gap has not been bridged by solid evidence.
What the evidence shows
Animal studies
The animal literature, much of it decades old, has reported effects such as changes in melatonin rhythms and, in some rodent experiments, increased lifespan or reduced tumour incidence.2,3 These findings are intriguing but come from a narrow set of laboratories and have not been widely reproduced under modern standards.
Human studies
Human data are very limited. The most-cited human reports come from a small number of Russian groups and describe outcomes such as changes in markers of ageing in older adults.3 Independent, well-controlled human trials are essentially absent. The single most important thing to understand about Epitalon is that the longevity claims greatly exceed the quality and quantity of the evidence behind them.

Safety & side effects
There are no long-term controlled human safety data for Epitalon. The limited reports describe it as generally well tolerated, but this is based on small, mostly older studies and anecdote rather than rigorous monitoring.3
A practical concern in the unregulated market is product quality. Identity, purity and dose accuracy vary between sources, which is a major reason professional oversight and pharmaceutical-grade sourcing matter for anyone considering any research peptide.
Legal & regulatory status
Epitalon is not approved by the FDA for any use, and it is not an approved medicine in the United States or most Western countries. It is sold only as an unapproved “research chemical.”4 Some related pineal peptides have a longer history of clinical use in Russia and CIS countries, but that does not reflect approval elsewhere. Rules differ by country and change over time.
