BPC-157

What it is
BPC-157 is a synthetic peptide derived from a sequence within a protein found in human gastric (stomach) juice. “BPC” stands for Body Protection Compound, and the “157” refers to its 15–amino-acid sequence. Because it is a fragment designed in the lab rather than the full natural protein, it does not occur on its own in the body.1
It is most often discussed as a “healing” peptide, promoted online for recovery from soft-tissue injuries and for gut health. It is important to separate that popularity from the strength of the evidence behind it, which is the focus of the sections below.
How it works
Research in animals suggests BPC-157 promotes healing largely by encouraging angiogenesis — the growth of new blood vessels into injured tissue — and by influencing growth-factor pathways such as VEGF and the nitric-oxide (NO) system.2 It has also been reported to interact with the body’s own repair signalling and to have protective effects on the gut lining.
These mechanisms are biologically plausible and reasonably consistent across rodent studies. How completely they translate to humans, and at what doses, is not yet established.
What the evidence shows
Animal studies
The large majority of BPC-157 research is preclinical. In rats, it has accelerated healing of Achilles tendon, muscle and ligament injuries, protected the gastrointestinal lining, and shown effects in models of inflammatory bowel disease.2,3 The consistency of these findings across many rodent experiments is what drives the peptide’s reputation.
Human studies
Published, peer-reviewed human clinical trials are essentially absent. Reports of benefit in people are largely anecdotal or come from clinics rather than controlled studies. This gap is the single most important thing to understand about BPC-157: a strong animal signal that remains unproven in humans.4

Safety & side effects
In the limited human use reported to date, BPC-157 is generally described as well tolerated, with occasional injection-site reactions.4 However, because there are no long-term controlled human safety studies, the real risk profile is genuinely unknown.
A practical concern in the unregulated market is product quality. Purity, dose accuracy and contamination vary between sources, which is a major reason professional, pharmaceutical-grade sourcing and clinician oversight matter for anyone considering a peptide.
Legal & regulatory status
BPC-157 is not approved by the FDA for any use. In 2023 the FDA placed it in a category that effectively restricts its use in pharmacy compounding pending more safety data.5 It is also prohibited in competitive sport — the World Anti-Doping Agency lists it among non-approved substances (category S0).6 Rules differ by country and change over time.
